Your initial consultation

Your consultation is one of the most important steps of pursuing a facelift. During this in-person meeting, you can expect your surgeon to do the following:

  • Ask why you want a facelift
  • Ask you about any concerns you have
  • Assess your facial structure and skin
  • Ask you about your medical history and drug allergies in order to minimize the risk of any complications
  • Explain all of the surgical and non-surgical anti-aging options available to you
  • Create a customized surgical plan for you

  • Educate you about the facelift techniques that may be used
  • Explain to you how a facelift will improve your specific appearance (or inform you if you’re not a good candidate)
  • Ask what your expectations and desired outcome are
  • Take photographs for your medical record
  • Go step-by-step through the surgical details, recovery process, and any risks or potential complications

Facelift surgical details

Because there is a range of facelift techniques that are highly individualized for each patient’s specific needs, the exact details of what your surgery will entail will be discussed more in-depth during your consultation. Determining which technique is right for your needs will depend on different factors such as your facial structure, any previous facial procedures you may have undergone, and your personal aesthetic goals.

Traditional facelift

The traditional facelift that most people know of targets the mid-face, neck, and jowls. The incision goes along the front and behind the ear. Excess skin and fat from the lower face and neck are removed, and the skin and underlying tissue is tightened. This procedure typically takes four hours and several weeks’ recovery time.

SMAS lift

A SMAS lift enhances the traditional facelift by elevating the skin as well as deeper tissues of the face and neck. The incision is made in front of the ear, through which the SMAS (superficial muscular aponeurotic system) is raised and tightened. The skin is also tightened.

Recovery

Patients should plan to take 10 to 14 days to recover, and should expect bruising and swelling to last about 2 to 3 weeks. The first few days should consist of plenty of bed rest. You may also experience tightness and numbness for several weeks. Any pain can be managed with over-the-counter medications.

Directly after our custom facelift in Surprise, you may have a bandage placed around your face to minimize swelling and bruising. Your surgeon will remove it within a couple of days. Sutures are typically removed within 5 to 10 days post-op.

During the recovery period, you should make sure that your head remains elevated when lying down, including when you sleep. High-intensity exercise and strenuous activities should be avoided for 6 to 8 weeks.

Results: what to expect

Final outcome from a facelift is apparent soon after the swelling and bruising have subsided, with results finalized at four months. You can expect your results to last up to ten years. Follow-up consultations with will help ensure your facelift results.

Candidates for a facelift

If you’re interested in a facelift in Phoenix you may be a great candidate. The best candidate for a facelift:

  • Has signs of aging in the face that causes him or her to look tired, angry, or sad
  • Is in their 40s to70s
  • Has minimal to moderate excess skin in the neck, jowls, and mid-face
  • Has good bone structure of the face and has lost some (but not all) skin elasticity
  • Is a non-smoker in general good health
  • Understands what a facelift can accomplish
  • Should be able to take up to two weeks away from work or daily responsibilities to make a full recovery
  • Is willing and able to follow the home care instructions we provide you with

Full facelift vs. mini facelift

Full facelift: The full facelift is ideal for patients who want a significant improvement of mid-face descent and jowling, as well as the “turkey neck” that many patients have and want to remove. A full facelift results in prolonged improvement, and is very high in patient satisfaction.

Mini lift: The mini facelift is a great option for patients who have a combination of minimal sagging of the mid-face and jowls, and minimal neck deformity. The re-suspension of the mid-face at the deeper layers allows for skin tightening on the surface with minimal tension. A mini lift takes approximately two hours and achieves long-term results in correctly selected patients.
